As it turns out, the boys didn’t only save some clothes before their home vanished but also food and plates.

Peter looks puzzled by this, scratching his head at the pile of dishes sitting on top of a tablecloth, along with some bottles of who-knows-what, some apples, and a heap of what looks like acorns. “Where did you get all this? Did the house sink slowly into the fucking ground, while you ran in and out snatching a full set of crockery?”

“We found the trunk in the bushes,” Wes says. “No idea how it got there. And the dishes were inside the trunk, too. We gathered the apples and acorns. Tink told us what to look out for. Now we just need protein.” He draws his gun, twines it around a finger. “Gonna go get us some.”

“Wait.” I take a step toward him. “You were on death’s doorstep not half an hour ago.”

“And now I’m not. See?” He winks. “Coming, Colt?”

“Yeah, yeah.” Colt checks his gun and smirks. “Let’s show those birds a good time.”

Huh.

“Where do they get this endless supply of bullets?” I mutter as the two of them swagger away, still flabbergasted that Wes is fine—a miracle, only this is a nightmare island, so miracles shouldn’t stick. “Do you bring them over from the human world, too?”

“Nah. I would never be able to bring enough. These are magical weapons, never running out of bullets.”

“So there is magic here? I mean… I saw the mermaids and the Reds but the only person I saw actually doing anything remotely magical was Tink.”

“And you,” he says, a small frown on his face as if he’s still trying to figure me out.

“We don’t know that.”

“Yeah, we do.”

I kneel on the cloth, watching Tink who’s gathering twigs for a fire, pink and copper hair sliding forward to hide his face, muscles bunching deliciously in his arms as he piles the wood in his hold. The soughing sound of the surf haunts my thoughts—like at the beach house, I think, all that time ago…

“I don’t think it’s the sex,” I say slowly.

“Oh?” Peter is flexing his hands. I wonder if he wants to grab my wrists. I wonder why he isn’t doing it.

“I think… it’s admitting to things. Remembering things or rather… letting the memories back in.”

“But you felt it, during sex, didn’t you? That fucking roll of power that bent the trees over.”

“I do but… I did have sex with…” I have to stop and swallow. “With Colt and Wes together, you know. And nothing happened. No power. No woosh of magic.”

“I know,” he mutters, “but that was before you returned. Returning changed something.”

“Peter—”

“It changed… everything.” He gives me a thoughtful look, but before I can ask what’s on his mind, he grins. “I think we need to look into this sex theory more. Test it, ya know?”

I stare at him. “Who are you and what have you done with Peter Pan the Grinch?”

“Come here,” he says and I obey.
